Getting Closer with God, Part 1

Scripture: Titus 3:1-5

Lifestyle of God’s Children

Titus 3:1-2 – “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.”

  • Paul reminds Titus and the believers in Crete seven qualities of God’s children.

  • Relevant to this day as powerful forces are at work to revert God’s children back to their old ways.

  • We were born into sin and reminders are continually needed to prevent is from wandering.

Life without God

Titus 3:3 – “At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.”

  • Sin led us astray from the spiritual truth

  • Paul explains the reason for the right conduct

  • Serves as a reminder of our past condition

The Divine Rescuer

Titus 3:4-5 –“ 4But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared, 5he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.”

  • This is God’s deliberate act to bring us into relationship with Him.

  • Jesus’ appeared – a clear manifestation of His unconditional love.

Application:

  • Practice Christ-like behavior everyday by asking yourself how you can make someone else’s life easier

  • Give yourself permission to grow by inviting a brother or a sister on your lifelong journey of spiritual transformation
