Part 2 of Christ’s Christmas Series Luke 2:1-20, Luis Cruz
The historian Luke captured the story of King Jesus’ humble birth. The animal feeding trough, the shepherds, and Bethlehem were all humble markers of the incarnation of the humble King and Savior. His humble birth was planned and prophesied ages ago, announced and praised by angels, and shared by humble people. His birth impacted our history. Our calendar points back to the time of His birth. And many humble people became great men and women of our faith throughout time.
1. The humble birth of the King.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.” Luke 2:4-7
Humble circumstance
No royalty treatment
No comfortable place to give birth
Wrapped in ordinary cloth
Placed in a manger
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Micah 5:2
2. The humble birth announced by angels.
“8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
God chose to reveal His Son to humble people.
Shepherds considered as outcasts.
They work in the field most of the time.
Uneducated and untrained.
Shepherds will not reject the manger.
God honoured the lowly and humble.
3. The humble birth became the Apex of history.
“15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.” Luke 2:15-18
Shepherds came to see Jesus.
They were untrained and uneducated.
They shared to others the birth of the King and Savior.
They worshipped God.
As a group, they continued to ponder the words of God delivered to them.
Our calendar points back to the year when Jesus was born, we call this A.D. which stands for Anno Domini. It is a Latin phrase which means in the year the Lord – the year Jesus was born.
My challenge for all of us today:
Never to forget that Jesus came into our world in a humble state so that we can approach Him anytime.
Never to forget to study the Word together as a group.
Never to forget to pray how you can share Jesus and have the courage to do so.
